The thermostat
Make sure it's set to cool and a few degrees below the current room temperature. If it runs on batteries, a fresh set can't hurt.

The breaker
Look at the breaker for the AC. If it's tripped, you can reset it once — but if it trips again, leave it off and call us.

The filter
A filter packed with dust chokes the whole system. If yours is clogged, swapping in a clean one is an easy fix worth trying.

Stay cooler meanwhile
Close the blinds against the sun and run ceiling or box fans. It won't fix the AC, but it keeps the house more bearable until we arrive.
